PROGRAMME

The proposed project aims to revitalize the historic building into a modern context, by creating an innovative integrated structure that focuses on the footprint of the existing building, to strengthen the historic and symbolic value of the former Maspes Vigorelli Velodrome.

The project reduces the current capacity to 5,570 seats, removes the historic cycling track and shortens the playing field to create two new large spaces in the semicircular ends of the existing building, now occupied by parabolic curves. A commercial space and a Sports Academy with training activities and technical and intellectual support to the growth of new young athletes will be located in these two new volumes.

Provided with new storage rooms and new spaces for maintenance and

control, besides new access gates to drive mobile stands and equipments onto the field, the new Maspes-Vigorelli will attract potential financial investors who could utilize it as a venue for international events of extreme sports.

The new architectural element of the sports arena is a new light and elegant steel canopy, reminiscent of the old cycling track, which floats slightly above the existing building.

The entire building will be wrapped in a new outer skin consisting of diamond-shaped panels in aluminum and polyethylene, folded together along their longitudinal axis. These panels will be arranged in such a way as to protect the building from direct sunlight whilst allowing the view of the historic building behind.
